You are ready to go trout fishing, and you’ve decided you want to use lures. That was a decision made between just a handful of choices, and its only the start! There are several types of trout fishing lures to choose from. Which kind you pick should be dependent on several factors. It is important to know that one lure is not necessarily better than another, but that they each have a time and a place when they are the prime choice. Because of this, you should know what kind of trout you are fishing for, what natural bait is present, and what the water and weather conditions will be, all of which will lead you in the right direction for selecting the lures to help you successfully catch your limit of trout.

One type of lure is the spoon, which is made in a variety of shapes and sizes. The thick spoons will dive deeper in the water, and because of their heavier weight, are easier to cast. You will want to use the smaller, thinner spoons for small to medium sized streams. Spoons come in basic gold or silver colors, often embellished with stripes or spots in assorted colors. When you cast with a spoon, you will want to aim diagonally across the water, a little upstream. The secret to trout fishing with spoons is using an uneven retrieval technique. This involves reeling fast enough to keep the line taught, but slightly jerking the rod tip so the lure darts and dives. A thin spoon works best in shallower water that is warmer, where the trout become more aggressive.

Another kind of popular lure is the spinner, which is rather heavy, and runs through the water well below the surface. You want to cast across the river and retrieve just fast enough to keep the lure off the bottom. The size you will use depends on the type of trout you seek, and the water it is in. For example, small brook trout living in little creeks and streams work best with tiny 1/32 ounce lures, on 2 pound test line. Medium streams call for spinners in the 1/16 to 1/18 ounce range. However, if you are after trophy Browns, use 8 pound test line with a 1/4 ounce spinner.

Plugs, especially minnow plugs, are many anglers’ favorite lure. Designed to imitate minnows in the water, they come solid or jointed, and start at around 2 inches and go up from there, although larger than 5 inches becomes too big for most trout. The uneven retrieval described above works well for plugs, although large trout sometimes go for a plug reeled in as quickly as you can.

You may want to check out flatfish lures, especially if you are fishing for Rainbows. They seem to be a big hit with them. Also, try your luck with Rooster tails, which are a variation of the spoon. In addition to the standard model, they have a small tuft of animal hair attached to them.

The most important thing for you to remember is that all lures are an attempt to make the fish believe it is food coming along. If you cast a heavy lure nearby where the trout is waiting, you may scare it off. Also, if your retrieval technique doesn’t produce any results, modify it a little and try something else. If there are no small fish bait present in the area, using a minnow plug will probably not prove successful. Look around and see what the trout ARE eating, and capitalize on that knowledge.

One last thought…. the lure you caught your limit with yesterday may be worthless today. The luck of the lure depends on so many things; how clear the water is, what temperature it is, the amount of sun, wind and outside factors beyond your control. Be prepared to do a little experimentation, and feel the excitement when you find the right combination!

Fly fishing strike indicators are designed to help you detect when a fish takes your fly so you can set the hook. They attach to your leader and are most commonly used when nymph fishing or when using other subsurface flies. However, they can also be used to help detect strikes when using small dry flies that are difficult to see. Strike indicators come in a wide array of sizes, colors, shapes, and materials each of which has its own set of advantages and disadvantages. So how do you choose which one to use in your own fishing situation?

One of the very best fly fishing strike indicators you can use that works in nearly every fishing situation isn’t even a strike indicator at all, or at least isn’t designed to be. The number one fly fishing strike indicator you’ve probably never heard of is a water balloon. This little known technique closely guarded by “hush-hush” fishing guides who wish to keep their top tips secret from the rest of us has several advantages over other types of strike indicators. Here’s 10 different ways water balloons make superior fly fishing strike indicators.

1.) Low cost

Purchasing a small package of 100 balloons for a few bucks can provide you with enough strike indicators to last decades. Look for round water balloons in the smallest size you can find.

2.) Size adjustable

It is possible to fish very large, heavily weighted flies and/or several sinkers beneath a water balloon because they float extremely well. Thus, you can still reach the bottom even in fast currents or in deep water without worrying about sinking your indicator. This allows you greater flexibility in reaching bottom hugging trout with your fly.

Water balloons are easy to cast, allowing you to make accurate presentations of your fly.

9.) Land delicately on the water

By using a water balloon as your fly fishing strike indicator, you can present your flies to even wary fish in clear water because the balloons are so light that they land very delicately on the water without spooking trout.
