The pheasant season opened at noon on a Saturday in South Dakota. I spent the morning in a rural farm home with my in-laws. Although most see this time spent as survival in purest form, I’ve always found it to be one of the better ways to begin the season. Late in the morning, all of the family had arrived and lunch was served. We got a late start (1:00pm) but none of us worried, we knew where we were hunting, South Dakota.

This particular day, ten of us had bagged twenty-eight birds by about 3:30pm. There is no doubt we could have continued on to drop the final two birds to limit out, but we felt it a better idea to get back to the house, clean the birds, and enjoy a cocktail. While this hunt ranked high in my all-time outings, similar stories are common from those who frequent South Dakota hunting lands in the fall.

What is at about this area that makes it such fantastic habitat for the Ringneck Pheasant? Some say that it is the native grasses and brush cover. Others will tell you it is the food supply, the grain this farmland produces. More will simply proclaim that the sparsely populated state of South Dakota allows for pheasants to reproduce in large numbers. I’d say that it’s a combination of all of the above.

In South Dakota, you’ll find well managed public lands and carefully developed private habitat. One will discover areas so dense with native growth that you will need multiple dogs adjacent to areas where you could actually get by without a bird dog. Hunters will no doubt find areas where they have to choose which of the many males to take a shot at. They will come to appreciate the hospitality of some of the most accommodating hunting lodges in the country. So practice your shot before you show up, because with this many birds, there may be a shortage of shotgun shells.

Remember: Communicate with your group, know where all members of your party are at all times, watch for your blockers, take careful shots, teach young hunters the safety fundamentals and enjoy a drink after the hunt has ended.

Ruffed Grouse Of North America

Ruffed Grouse are one of ten species of grouse that are native to North America and are one of the smaller birds in the group, ranging from 17 to 25 oz.

Red-phased grouse become more prevalent in milder climates, and the gray birds are more abundant where winter climates are more severe.  Ruffed Grouse are brownish colored birds larger than pigeons, living their entire lives in wooded areas. The males are usually slightly larger than the females.

The name “Ruffed”  derived it name from some long, shiny, black or chocolate colored neck feathers that are most prominent on the male.

When the male is in full display in defense of his territory, or showing off to a hen, these feathers are extended into a spectacular ruff, which, together with a full fanned tail, makes him look twice his normal size. Drumming occurs throughout the year, so long as his “log” is not under snow. In the spring, drumming occurs more frequent and longer as the male grouse reveals his location to hens seeking a mate.

The male grouse proclaims his property rights by engaging in a “drumming” display. This sound is made by beating his wings against the air to create a vacuum. The drummer usually stands on a log, stone or mound of dirt when drumming, and this object is called a “drumming log.” He does not strike the log to make the noise, he only uses the “drumming log” as the stage for his display.
Courtship is a brief event then the hen wanders away in search of a nesting site, and there is no further association between the male grouse and his mate. The brood of chicks she produces are fully raised by her.

During the winter, the Ruffed Grouse may dive into soft snow to spend the night where falling snow can hide the evidence of their entry.

A grouse bursting at one’s feet from flat snow covered ground can be quite startling thrill.

Ruffed Grouse populations go through 8 to 11 year cycles of increasing and decreasing numbers.
These cycles can be due to predator populations increasing and decreasing

How To Catch Largemouth Bass

Largemouth bass fishing is one of the most exhilarating and popular freshwater fishing sports in North America. Many fisherman, pros and novices alike, search for the rush of hooking an elusive largemouth bass. Bass are known to be hard biters and strong fighters, and amongst the smartest of freshwater fish. They can be picky about what they eat and often change locations, but with a little knowledge and some good old fashioned luck, you can easily hook a huge lunker. I have been fishing for bass for more than 20 years, so I figure it’s time I shared some of my knowledge and experience. After reading this article, you should definitely be able to go out and hook yourself a fightin’ largemouth bass!

Live baits are probably the easiest type of bait to catch largemouth with. The reason is simple. It’s the real thing. If you had a choice between a real apple and a plastic replica, which would you choose? It’s not really that simple, fish can be fooled into believing that plastic baits are real, if they look real. The two best baits to catch largemouth on are minnows and nightcrawlers. There are other kinds of live baits, but these are the two most popular. They both have their own way of being fished. Nightcrawlers are generally fished using a #2 or #4 hook and suspended about two feet below the below the surface, using a float or “bobber”. Minnows are fished by hooking them through their front lip while still alive. This is so that when they hit the water, they can still swim naturally and attract a hungry largemouth.

There are many types of lures that fall into the plastics category, but in in terms of largemouth bass, I’m referring to rubber worms, frogs, lizards, and leeches. Bass love rubber worms. When you go shopping for your bait, you’ll see that there are literally hundreds of different kinds. I recommend finding brightly colored worms, either 5″ or 6″, if you want to catch largemouth bass. You can also find worms that already have the hooks in them, and yet others that are set up to be “weedless”.

Bass are often found close to shore. A great place to cast is underneath trees that hang into the water and areas where there is a lot of growth next to the shoreline and in the water. You need to be extra careful not to get snagged and tangled as you fish these areas. A weedless plastic worm works great. If you follow these tips, it won’t be long before you catch your first largemouth bass!
