Ilfracombe is a city found along the north coast of Devon. It is surrounded by cliffs and has a small harbor. The highest point is at Hore Down Gate with much of the city being built on hills. Hillsborough hill is the most important landmark and contains a Celtic fortress from the Iron Age.

Ilfracombe has two distinct communities a farming and fishing community. The fishing community is found by the harbor and the farming community centers around the parish church. It was an important part in the 1200s as it supplied many ships and men to fight in Ireland and Scotland. One of the oldest working lighthouses is found in the harbor, St Nicholas’s Chapel, and has been in that same spot for over 650 years.

This town was known as a resort town and was very popular in the Victorian era. It became an area with many seasonal employees causing much friction with the full year residences. Tourism became popular because ferries traveling the Bristol Channel regularly visited the city. Railway also increased tourism. The economy has fluctuated with the closure of public transportation and changes in British holidays.

Each year there are six carnivals in Ilfracombe that celebrate the areas heritage. There is a May Day walking celebration, Victorian celebration, and weeklong programme in June that celebrates the town’s prosperity, street carnival procession in August, the Lighting of the Light sin November and Chritingle at Christmas.

The Ilfracombe round Table host’s two yearly charitable events, the South West Birdman contest and Rescue Day. The South West Birdman contest requires entrants to fly home made machines wearing costumes. During Rescue Day any town member can learn emergency services with the most exciting being an air-sea rescue.

Ilfracombe is also known historically for fires as the buildings were crowded together in Victorian times. There have been large fires that have destroyed entire section of the city. The Montabello Hotel, the Arcade, The Castle Hotel, the Mount Hotel, Portland Street, and High Street have all burned at some point in time.
