So You Need a Flat Screen TV Stand

If you are like me, you got that brand new flat screen tv home and realized that you did not have anything to put it on. So now it is time to go out and start looking at the different types of flat screen tv stands available. When you do this you will notice that there are a plethora of tv stands available, but only a few will catch your eye. However before you make that purchase there are some things that you need to take into consideration.

First you will want to decide whether you want to mount the flat screen tv on the wall or if you do want it on a tv stand. For the sake of starters, we are going to begin with flat screen tv stands. Upon that decision you will need to determine what size and weight limitations you will need to look at when determining the type of stand you want. Once you have those things decided its time to begin looking at the different types of flat screen tv stands. Essentially there are only a couple different types such as the standard rectangular tv stand, the corner tv stand and the more robust entertainment center.

Corner tv stands will allow you to save a little space over the standard rectangular sized flat screen tv stand as it fits into the corner of your room and does not protrude into the living area as much. However, you will be limited as to where you can put the stand as you have to stick to the corners. The standard flat screen tv stand will allow you to put it anywhere in the room essentially but it might stick out into the living area a little bit more.

The more robust entertainment centers are also a good option but definitely space consuming if you are looking for something to save space. Now they have entertainment centers that can adjust to the size of your flat screen tv so that you are not always going to have the same sized flat screen to put into it. Entertainment centers are also considerably more in cost as well but if you have the money and space these are definitely a nice addition to the home and can bring great enjoyment.

As mentioned at the beginning of this article you might also consider flat screen tv wall mounts as well, which will allow you to mount the flat screen tv onto the wall. This actually is the best space saving option, but there are things to consider when deciding if this is the option for you. You will need to determine if you have the “know how” to actually make this work or whether you need someone to come in and professionaly install the tv wall mounts. This can be tricky as you will want to hide your wiring in the wall so that they are not sticking out everywhere. Whatever route you decide to go you need to get to looking at the tv stands available now so that you can start enjoying that new flat screen tv right away.

In the Hale Pahu, or drum house, drums and other instruments needed for hula dances were stored. In the Hale Ulana, or weaving house, women created mats, baskets, fans, and other items from dried leaves woven delicately together. Near the water, the Hale Wa’a, or canoe house, held canoes made from koa wood, or tropical mahogany. Closest to the shoreline, the Hale Lawai’a:, or fishing house, provided space for fishermen to prepare their gear and nets.

While the chief lived in the Hale Ali’i, other Hawaiians lived in a much more modest “Hale Noho.” In this house, extended family members slept in a specific order under one roof. The traditional beds used by Hawaiians consisted of dried grass and leaves spread on the earth Mats places over the grass completed the bed.

Besides these daily living spaces, the ancient Hawaiian village also had several temples, as the ancient Hawaiian culture and religion focused on honoring the gods. Various temples were built for the gods of war, peace, health, fishing, farming, or other attributes. The heiau, or temple, might range from a simple structure to an enclosed complex or open-air temple. Only chiefs and kahuna (priests) were allowed to enter most heiau. Today, there are still a few heaiu on the islands, including several on the Big Island of Hawaii. Carved figures, including the famous tiki, adorn each temple. The chiefs and kahuna draw divine power (or mana) from the temples.

If you visit Hawaii, making a trip to historic ruins is a must-see. Just a few of these structures still exist today, and visitors must be very cautious when visiting them. Though they have endured thousands of years, the structures themselves are quite fragile.

Stainless steel trim is common on older cars. Being on the road can be tough on your trim and you may find that you have dents in areas like the trim around your windows. You can remove these dents from your stainless steel trim yourself. Consult your automotive repair manual for full details or follow these simple steps:

Step One: Prepare the piece of trim by taking a black felt tip marker and coloring over the dented area. Once complete, take a fine mill bastard file and gently rasp it over the colored area. This will reveal the dented areas as the ink on the high areas will be stripped away. Remember to be gentle, though, as you do not want deep scratches in your trim.

Step Two: Now that you know where your dents are you can begin to work them out. Flip the trim over and, using a metal punch, gently push on the dent in several areas. Do not use a lot of pressure or beat on the trim. Repeat this process, checking with the file on the side with the ink until the dent is completely gone. This step takes time and patience. You may want to use your marker to test for new dents in the area as well.

Step Three: After completing step two, your dents should now be flush. You can test this by repeating step one. Once you are sure your trim is dent free, you still need to do some cleanup work to get your trim looking shiny and new. The first thing you need to do is even out some of the file markings that you left while testing for your dents. You can do this by rasping the file back and forth across the scratched area. You should change directions occasionally, to make a cross hatch. This will prevent you from scratching the metal too deeply.

Step Four: Once you are satisfied that your surface is even, you will need to smooth the scratches out of the metal. You can do this by taking a piece of wet 220 grit sandpaper and gently smoothing the scratches out of the metal. This step takes a lot of time and patience but the efforts are well worth it. Next, you will need to take this smoothing process to an even greater level. Repeat the process with the sandpaper but use a wet 400 grit sandpaper to smooth out the scratches created with the 400 grit. Be careful while using the sandpaper. Your goal is to remove the scratches so you don’t want to press too hard.

Once you have completed the four steps above, you’ll need to have the metal polished to regain its original shine. If you have a polishing/buffing wheel, you can complete this step yourself. However, this step can be tricky so you may want to find a professional that can help you buff and shine your trim for a reasonable price. You can consult your electronic auto repair manual for more information about the polishing step.

Removing small dents from your stainless steel trim can easily be accomplished by a do-it-yourselfer with a little time and patience.

Hokusai (1760-1849) is celebrated for his designs of Mount Fuji, the most famous mountain of Japan. Hokusai (translated ‘polar star’) depicts Mount Fuji in an impressive triangular form in his prints of the sacred mountain in the summer with floating clouds and lightning to the right side of the mountain. One look on such a simple and effective composition makes an indelible impression on the beholder.

Early Life

Little is known about Hokusai’s early life. From what he has told himself he developed an urge to draw all kinds of subjects related to nature from the age of 6. Also from an early age he came into touch with the art of woodcutting. This knowledge was as a ‘hidden force’ when he became a woodblock designer in his adult life. At the age of 19 he became a pupil of Shunsho which marks the beginning of his career as a illustrator.

His first prints give the impression that Hokusai was not a strikingly gifted talent but that was compensated by his extreme devotion to drawing. That’s the reason why Hokusai’s productivity is unmatched in the history of Ukiyo-e. At first he designed mainly kabuki(actor) prints and book illustrations but slowly he started experimenting within the other Ukiyo-e genres such as ’surimono‘ (commissioned print), ‘kacho-ga‘ (flower and bird print) and shunga (erotic print).

Sketchbooks

Hokusai undertook a journey in 1812 to Kyoto and Osaka. On this ocassion he produced hundreds of sketches with the intention of getting them published in the form of a manual on the art of drawing. Between 1812 and 1820 the first ten volumes were published which are known to the world as the ‘Sketchbooks of Hokusai’ (Hokusai Manga)‘. This overwhelming quantity and striking diversity of sketches shows the viewer the full reality of the Japanese daily life. The subjects and themes are almost infinite and forms a colourful collection of human life and work, mythology and of the material and natural environment.

It is as if the production of these sketchbooks were a finger exercise, a contemplative preamble for his masterpiece which places Hokusai in the pantheon of greatest artists being on a par with Raphaël, Michelangelo and Rembrandt. This masterpiece series, called the ‘36 Views of Mount Fuji’ (Fugaku sanjurokkei), with Mount Fuji as its main subject, portrayed under changing weather circumstances from different locations and points of view, was published when Hokusai was 70. One of the prints is called the ‘Beneath the Wave of Kanagawa’ (The Great Wave) and is the most well-known print in the history of Japanese woodblock art.

Hokusai’s Great Wave print depicts a gigantic wave coming from the left and reaching up into the sky with its tentacle crests ready to destroy the boats including the poor fishermen. It’s the magnificent juxtaposition of the three elements the divine, the human and the earthly presented here in a perfect harmony giving the image such an impact and power.

It was Hokusai’s ‘36 Views of Mount Fuji’ -series and especially The Great Wave that provided the impressionists the impetus they needed in their quest to produce a new art as stated by Edmond de Goncourt in his book on Hokusai in 1896: “This horizontal series, with its rather crude colours, which nonetheless attempt to reproduce nature’s colours under all lightning conditions, is the album which inspires the landscapes of the impressionists of the present moment”.
