I’ve done a ton of fishing, and most of the guys I fish with carry the typical single or occasional two piece fishing rod. A couple of those guys, however, carry a little secret with them when they head out of town on trips that aren’t necessarily “fishing trips”. Something they can tuck away and pull out when the opportunity arises. These guys know that an opportunity might present itself at any moment. Having a telescopic fishing rod on hand when that moment arrives can literally mean the difference between fishing and not fishing.

A friend of mine loves the boundary waters of Northern Minnesota. His favorite story involves a particularly long trek where he needed to pack light… only the basics. This meant no extravagances like a seven foot Loomis rod. So he packed his Shimano telescopic rod in his Duluth pack with a few crankbaits and reel and headed off on his trip. He was probably two days in before he decided to wet a line. In the late afternoon he tied on a Shad Rap and started working the shallows. A couple of casts in and he had his first walleye. Over the next couple of hours he landed a pile of nice fish, releasing every one. He said the fact that he had a telescopic rod in his hand never even crossed his mind. He was casting and catching just like he would with any other rod.

Another friend of mine loves going after croakers and surfperch out in Southern California. This guy is nuts about beach fishing. He likes a 13 foot rod to chuck that bait out as far as he can and work it in. Well his family loves playing on the beach as well and on those occasions where they pack a lunch and head out to play he can’t get his long stuff packed in the car.
