How To Get Ready For The Walleye Season Opener

Walleye season is just about to open and the first day is always an eye-opening experience for all.  You need to start preparing in order to enjoy maximum fishing pleasure. Although you do this every year, you still end up forgetting one or two essentials. For a perfect start this year, use the following tips as a checklist of things to do and bring.

Checking Your Fishing Gear and Equipment for the Walleye Season

Fishing License – Don’t wait for trouble to come knocking at your door. Apply early, submit your requirements promptly, and keep your fishing license together with the rest of your fishing gear.

Tackle Box – You can’t catch walleye without bait so make sure your tackle box contains all the necessary equipment: live and plastic bait, jigs and rigs, hooks, slip bobbers, split shots, hooks, plugs, crank baits, and crawler harnesses. Keep in mind that the quantity of bait and other tackling essentials you’ll bring with you will greatly depend on when and where you’ll be fishing.

Fishing Rods, Reels, and Lines – For fishing novices, keep in mind that this recreational activity is just like playing golf or tennis. There are certain rods, reels, and lines that work better in certain situations.

Fishing Nets – Consider taking with you several types and sizes of fishing nets to meet all possible fishing needs you’ll encounter on the opening day of walleye season.

Troubleshooting Kit – Take a pair of pliers with you: this is the ultimate fishing tool that will help you solve lots of small and big troubles while you’re fishing for walleye. Make sure you also have a filet knife, side planers, fish chains, nail clippers, forceps, and hook sharpeners included in your troubleshooting kit.

Locating Tools – To help you search for more walleye, make sure you’ve got with you fish markers, a portable fish finder, compass, head lamps, fish scale, fishing maps, and tape measure.

Electronic Equipment – Have a camera with you at all times to keep photographic evidence and remembrances of your catches. Make sure you’ve got an extra electric motor ready for emergency needs. If possible, have GPS and batteries as well.

Comfort – To be able to fish more comfortably and successfully, make sure you’re wearing fishing boots and you’ve got life jackets and rain gear ready in cases of emergency. A pair of fishing gloves, a bottle of mosquito repellent (one that won’t be easily washed off by water, preferably), sunscreen and sunglasses, all-purpose rags, and a small bucket for your dumping needs. Pillows and sleeping bags are also necessary if you’re staying the whole day. There’ll be times when you’ll need to take a short nap while waiting for some walleye to take the bait.

Consider any special health conditions you may have. If you are wearing contact lenses, be sure to take with you all your supplies.

Consider bringing means to entertain yourself especially if you’re fishing on your own. Take with you a couple of books, a portable DVD or music player, or playing cards. Other essentials you could bring are garbage bags, a knife, axe, and flashlight.

Food – If it’s going to be a long trip, decide if you wish to go to the bank once in a while to eat. If not that, check if you’ve got all your cooking supplies. Have your coolers ready, a bottle opener, coffee maker, ice, eating utensils, plates and glasses, and sealable bags.  

Boat – Have a professional give your boat a thorough checkup at least a month before the opening of walleye season to ascertain if it’s ready to face another fun but challenging voyage. Make sure you’ve got boat seats, anchors, and an adequate supplies of oil or gas. Take a repair kit on board and make sure you know the basic troubleshooting solutions for common boating problems.

If you’re fishing in a new area, make sure your boat is capable of meeting the expected current strength, depth, and weather conditions.

Medical Kit – Besides the usual essentials of a basic medical kit, take with you as well a couple of painkillers, moist towelettes, tissue paper, and allergy medicine since you’ll be spending a lot of time outdoors.

General Concerns – Of course, preparing for the opening of walleye season isn’t limited to checking your gear and equipment. Familiarize yourself with the rules and requirements as well.

The Carolina rig is one of the most versatile and fun ways of getting Bass on the end of our lines. And it’s not just limited to Largemouth. Smallmouth are just as willing to take a bait Carolina rigged!

By versatile, I mean many different fishing situations can be fished Carolina style. From shore, for example, a Bass angler could use it to cover a lot of real estate in deep or shallow structured water. As a matter of fact, deep water is a Carolina Rig forte! Weights of 14 oz. up to and over 1oz. can be used to get the offering out there and down deep. So obviously, a longer rod and a heavier weight can give a shore angler quite an advantage.

As a young shore Bass angler the Carolina rig put many Bass in my ‘bucket well’. And I still use it today whether on shore or on the boat. It is simple tactics all packed into one basic rig. All we do with it is rig our weights and hook sizes according to conditions and baits used.

The Carolina rig is made up of 3 components, the main line, weight and a fluorocarbon leader. The main line is threaded through an egg sinker then through a bead and tied to a swivel. The bead ensures the swivel and weight doesn’t bind for smooth flowing line; not to mention noise which can be tuned with many different ideas to get the fish’s attention. The fluorocarbon is then tied to the swivel with the hook completing the rig. When a Bass takes the bait it shouldn’t feel resistance because of the line traveling through the weight as opposed to a stationary weight. This works especially well with fussy Bass. A full-bellied Bass can’t resist an easy meal, but if that easy meal comes with restrictions, they will let it go quickly.

In order to achieve no restriction for the Bass a long rod combined with a flipping switch on a bait casting reel is warranted. The longer rod gives us more lineal footage so that when a Bass takes the bait one simply has to drop the rod for that added slack. The flipping switch on bait casting reels such as Quantum’s Accurist PT or Shimano’s Castaic 200 SF have easy spool disengaging capabilities. Every little thing helps in putting fish in the well.

The technique that goes with Carolina rigging is as basic as the rig itself. Cast it out as far as you can and with the spool still disengaged, let the rig fall vertically to the bottom. Once it reaches its end, engage the spool and start to work the bait home ever so slowly dragging it in and around structure. We should be able to feel every single piece of debris in the baits travel including, the slightest nudge from a Bass. When you feel the Bass, give it slack with either the rod or the reel and then set the hook hard. Smallmouth is the aggressive one of the two species so sometimes there is no time for slack. When you feel the pull set the hook hard and fast.

The best part of Carolina rigging is the fact that there is virtually no plastic out there that can’t be fished this way. Also, structure of any type can be fished with total confidence in knowing hang ups are very minimal by rigging the bait Texas. The other advantage is the use of fluorocarbon leaders which is practically invisible to the fish. To the Bass, no strings attached means an easy meal especially when it happens to crawl in front of its face.

Carolina rigging in general is a good all around technique for versatile shore or boat angling. Spooked Bass, finicky Bass, cold front Bass or just leisure Bass will take it. It is the ‘cats meow’ of Bass catching methods.

When it comes to largemouth bass bait it seems as if the choices available to anglers are almost endless. Some bass baits are easier to use than others and in this article I’m going to discuss some of the more “easy to use” bass baits. Does this mean that these bass baits can be tied on, thrown into the water, and the result will be bass being caught? More than likely not because fishing, as any seasoned angler knows, is about more than just throwing a bait into the water and catching fish in most situations.

In many instances fishing is about technique, and technique is developed through practice. There is simply no substitute for spending time on the water practicing your craft. With that being said when it comes to largemouth bass bait, the baits listed below are some of the easier to use (at least initially). Adding all of them to your bass fishing repertoire and then using them to develop your own “techniques” is a great idea.

Let’s get down to business, shall we?

1. The Plastic Worm – The plastic worm is one of the best known largemouth bass baits of all time. There are many different ways to fish a plastic worm, from the Carolina rig to the wacky rig, but the easiest to use rig for a plastic worm is the Texas rig. The Texas rig involves only three components; the worm, a worm hook, and a bullet weight. The plastic worm is a very “easy to use” bass bait, especially when rigged on a Texas rig. The point is that the plastic worm is an easy to use bass bait.
2. Live Bait – Live bait is a very easy to use largemouth bass bait. A key to success when using live bait for largemouth bass is to rig your bait in a natural manner. The best way to accomplish this task is through the use of gang hooks. These hooks enable live bait to be presented in a totally natural and effective manner. Many largemouth bass purists see live bait as some sort of “cop out”, but that doesn’t mean that it’s not effective (and easy to use). Live bait works very well for largemouth bass fishing.
3. Crank Baits – Crank baits are very easy to use, seeing as how you simply cast them out and reel them in, but they can be extremely effective bass baits. The key with crank baits is practice. The more time that you spend fishing them, the more little nuances you will discover. This is where crank bait fishing becomes the most effective. An incredibly realistic Largemouth Bass Bait is the KickTail Minnow. This crank bait looks as much like a real bait fish as any fishing lure that I’ve ever come across. The realistic appearance makes it very effective as well.

These easy to use bass baits should be a part of every bass fisherman’s tackle box. If any of the above bass baits aren’t in your tackle box, I suggest you add them sooner rather than later.
