No matter what part of the world you want to fish in, you can be sure there is a fishing map available. These maps provide enough information on the surrounding area and type of fish you can expect to find. These maps are more focused on bodies of water and wildlife versus the road maps we use.

Fishing Tours:

This is one of the great ways to get to Scotland and fish without the hassle and worry of finding accommodations, searching for the right fishing spot and knowing what fish are available in the waters you wish to fish.

These trips come as a complete package. Accommodations, transportation to and from the airport, fishing permits, instructions on fishing, tackle, waders and a guide. Instructional guides are available on a day-to-day basis. If you want more time with your guide, you can always make those arrangements.  Companies like “Tweed Guide” provide fishing trips like what is discussed in this article.

Roughing it on your own:

The worst way to do this is to just book a room, flight and test your luck. Doing it this way will most likely end up in failure. Even though you may be experience in the U.S, the trout and environment is much different. I would recommend either a very good detailed fishing map or an all-day guide. There is no use spending all that money to take the trip and then come back with nothing to boast about.

If you do plan to go to Scotland, plan your trip early. Do lots of research or hire a company like what was explained above. Your goal is to have fun and catch a trout. Spend a little extra money on hiring a guide and you will have a much more enjoyable time.

Mackerel fishing is always a family favorite. Either jigging or trolling for them, the family usually gets fed.

• Mackerel are fairly powerful mid swimming fish, so a strong rod and line will eliminate disappointment for the children.
• Use a minimum of 20 lb line, as often a full string of feathers will produce as many fish in one haul.
• Set your rig of feathers with the weight furthest away from the rod, if that is the method you choose. Between the main line from your rod end fix a swivel or ideally a swivel clip and fix the ready-made trace of feathers to that. Finally as described before the weight. 3-4oz is usually sufficient for jigging.
