All the Fun of the Pharaohs
There are a few types of trip commonly associated with Egypt: Nile cruises, all the ancient stuff, and expensive ‘do-nothing’ breaks on the shores of the Red Sea.
Not many people choose to combine the above three, but I’m not many people. I am one man. One man who happened to go on a multi-stop break around one of the world’s longest-established holiday destinations.
When I say ‘longest-established’, I mean it. The Romans were known to have made the pilgrimage to Cairo to marvel at the Pyramids at Giza during the height of their empire – about 2000 years ago. It is easy enough to picture the travel-weary Romans now, shielding themselves from the sun after their arduous overland journey of thousands of miles.
It took a grand total of four-and-a-half hours for me to get to Cairo, then another hour to reach my hotel, which just so happened to have a view that wasn’t half-bad. All three pyramids lined up neatly outside my veranda. No lashing sands for me then.
That isn’t to say Cairo is all luxury. Getting around can be a chore, particularly considering that the city’s population of 17 million has to get around using an infrastructure designed for just five million. So it you’re heading to the Pyramids, leaving early is a must.
The Pyramids and Sphinx need no introduction. They are huge and impressive and I can now say I have been there and done that, although unfortunately I couldn’t find the t-shirt seller.
When you’re done with the big and impressive stuff, escape the heat by stepping into a mosque during one of the five daily prayer times. Sit quietly in the cool of the building and watch the prayers take place. It was as much a religious experience as an escapist one considering the mayhem outside.
But after a few days in Cairo it was quite a relief to be able to up sticks and head somewhere a bit more tranquil. Next stop, Luxor.
Luxor is Egypt’s museum and the home of the Nile cruise. The Valley of the Kings lies nearby, as does the Temple of Hatshepsut, the Colossi of Memnon and Karnak and Luxor temples.
My home for one solitary night was the exquisitely appointed Sonesta Moon Goddess boat, moored in the centre of the city on the Nile’s east bank. All mod cons were on board including a gym and plunge pool, and the staff were efficient and charming.
Sadly there wasn’t enough time to travel anywhere on the river, but I did get a chance to see Luxor museum (quite small but with some wonderful exhibits) and Luxor Temple – a place which encapsulates the country’s heritage even more so than the all-too-mentioned Pyramids.
If you fancy learning about Egypt’s history in more depth, a visit to Luxor’s Cultnat heritage centre is an idea – you can watch panoramic video about the rites and rituals of ancient Egypt and really do some in-depth research in their extensive library.
Pretty soon my time in Luxor was up. I was still reflecting on what I would do on my return visit as the plane that was to carry me to Sharm el Sheikh came into view. I was not terribly impressed.

What amounted a large metal pipe with four desk fans strapped to the sides was supposed to transport myself and 30 others across 250-odd miles of desert, mountains and shark-infested waters to the resort of Sharm el Sheikh.
I was convinced that I was doomed. A brief conversation with one of my fellow passengers (a seven-foot German called Roland) ran something like this:
Roland: Don’t worry, prop planes are actually very safe.
Me: Please explain
Roland: Well even if three props fail, they can continue on just one engine
Me: Oh god.
One nervous hour later, and to my great surprise, we touched down in Sharm with all four engines spinning merrily away. I was promptly whisked away to my accommodation – one of the resort’s very nice and very large, and utterly charmless hotels overlooking the beach.
Sharm is billed as a diver’s paradise, and it really is. Just swimming a few metres from the beach and away from any rocks I saw a yard-long turquoise fish in completely open water that was perfectly happy to let me share its wake for a minute or two. It was a shame that no-one warned me about the dangers of what lurks in the water…
The problem wasn’t what would happen if a fish took a bite out of me, but rather the consequences of me taking a bite out of a fish. Before I travelled to Egypt people warned me about food and drink. Don’t have ice, don’t drink tap water and don’t eat salad were the three main concerns.
It would have been helpful if someone had added – don’t eat seafood. But they didn’t. So I found myself enjoying the latest fad diet which I have dubbed ‘the Cairo calorie counter’. This diet consists of one seafood meal, followed by sitting on the toilet for two days and having nothing but water and fruit juice. I lost the best part of a stone – it really works!
Other than the experience outlined above – which was my fault as much as anything, I have nothing but praise for the food in Egypt. Delicious spiced kebabs and flatbreads, amazing dips and sauces and delicious traditional sweet and gooey puddings are on offer – and you can eat ludicrously cheaply.
I lunched at Abou el Sid in Zamalek in Cairo where starters are around 10 Egyptain pounds per dish (around 80p) and mains are 20-40 Egyptian pounds (£2-£4).
My last morning in Egypt was spent on a quad bike safari in the desert to watch the sun rise over the mountains of the Sinai Peninsular.
The trip started a 3.45am. I was accompanied by four chain-smoking Russians who did nothing but talk about formula one, which didn’t put me entirely at ease about doing 40mph over undulating scorching sand and jagged rocks. Nevertheless, the bike was surprisingly easy to master and I was soon zipping through the dunes with a huge grin underneath my Arabic headscarf.
We stopped with a u-shaped wall of mountain to our backs and waited in silence for a while. The Russians lit their cigarettes and I pushed record on my handycam. Above our subdued chatter, we were hit by an ever increasing wave of intense heat as the Middle Eastern sun rose in the distance. It was the highlight of my trip and certainly worth the ungodly early start.
Afterwards, we hopped back in the saddle for a tea break, Bedouin style. Tiny glasses of tea with four sugars in each were plenty to give me the energy needed for my return journey back to the UK.
